Emerging Technology: What is it?

Abstract

The term emerging technology (ET) has been frequently used by IT professionals and academics. However, little research has shed light on this term and specified its characteristics and what it means. Therefore, this paper aims to define and conceptualize the characteristics of ET. These characteristics are uncertainty, network effect, unseen social and ethical concerns, cost, limitation to particular countries, and a lack of investigation and research. Several examples of ETs are given to validate these characteristics.

Author Biography

Mohanad Halaweh, College of Information Technology, University of Dubai

Mohanad Halaweh is an Assistant Professor in the College of Information Technology at the University of Dubai (UD). Before joining UD in August 2009, he was teaching at De Montfort University, Faculty of Technology, UK. He received his PhD in Information Systems from De Montfort University and MSc and BSc in Computer Information Systems from Jordan. Dr. Halaweh has published in the International Journal of Business Information Systems, Journal of Technology Management and Innovation, International Journal of E-business Research, Journal of Information Technology Theory and Application, the Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries and others. He also has published and participated in many international IS conferences. In one of these, he received a ‘Best Paper Award’. Dr. Halaweh has recently received the Reserach Excellence Award for the academic year 2011-2012. His main research interest covers e-commerce, security and privacy issues in e-commerce, IT adoption and usability, and IS research methods (Grounded Theory).
